the "Bavarian Versailles"
Herrenchiemsee is a complex of royal buildings, that lie on Herreninsel. This island is located on the largest lake of Bavaria - the Chiemsee lake, 60 km southeast from Munich. The former Herrenchiemsee monastery was converted into a royal residence after being purchased by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It is now known as the Old Palace. King Ludwig also built another palace - the New Palace - the largest of his palaces inspired by the famous French Versailles.
